H. Brian Thompson

Commissioner H. Brian Thompson, as first a pioneer and now as a veteran senior executive, has had decades of disproportionate influence on the competitive landscape of the global communications industry. He currently serves as Executive Chairman of GTT, as a member of the Irish Prime Minister’s Ireland-America Economic Advisory Board,

Commissioner Thompson served as Chairman of Comsat International, which was the largest independent telecommunications operator serving all of Latin America and which was eventually absorbed by British Telecom. He served as Chairman and CEO of Global TeleSystems Group, Inc., LCI International, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Qwest. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President of MCI Communications Corporation, contributing to the company’s growth from $230 million to $8 billion in revenue and guiding the internationalization of the business. Previously Commissioner Thompson was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company where he specialized in the management of telecommunications and technology enterprises.

He currently serves on the boards as a Director of Pendrell Corporation, Penske Automotive Group, and Sonus Networks, Inc. and formerly served on the boards of ArrayComm, Axcelis Technologies, Inc., Bell Canada International Inc., Comcast UK Cable Partners Limited, DynCorp, Williams Communications Group, Inc., and Golden Books. Commissioner Thompson served as Chairman of both the Advisory Committee for Telecommunications and, more recently, the Advisory Committee on Infocoms. He served as Chairman of Telecom Eireann, Ireland’s incumbent telephone company.

He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lab School of Washington & Baltimore, and is a former Chairman of the U.S. Competitive Telecommunications Association. He also served on the University of Massachusetts Chancellor’s Executive Committee, and as a Trustee of Capitol College.

Commissioner Thompson continues to head his own private equity investment and advisory firm, Universal Telecommunications, Inc., which focuses on both start-up companies and consolidations taking place in the information and telecommunications business areas.

Thompson is a GIIC Chairman Emeritus, and in this role had a major influence on information infrastructure investment and the rise of competitive telecommunications throughout the world.
