Commissioner Nichols is the CEO of Declaration Networks Group, which creates affordable and sustainable broadband ecosystems that are tailored for under-served communities. He has previously held senior leadership positions in technology companies bringing new services to markets, including Neustar, Iridium, American Mobile, and USinternetworking.
Commissioner Nichols co-founded and was the principal actor for the nationally recognized AIR.U initiative along with Google, Microsoft, New America Foundation, Appalachian Regional Commission, and Higher Ed Groups representing over 500 Colleges and Universities. This initiative was instrumental in informing policy activities for the growing set of unlicensed frequencies, as well and identifying barriers and solutions for the practical deployment and adoption of broadband networks, business models, applications and end-user services.
The GIIC recognizes Robert Nichols for his leadership in the development and deployment of alternative communications; for his tangible contributions in providing broadband services to under-served communities; and, for his influence and initiative in facilitating policy advice for the use of unlicensed spectrum to serve public interests.
